    JPF First Aid FAQs

Do I need a First Aider in my workplace?

First Aid provision should be provided to allow immediate medical assistance should an accident or incident take place in your workplace environment. This is in line with The Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981, where employers are required to provide such provision if employees are injured or taken ill at work.

How do I know what first aid provision is needed for my workplace?

First aid provision must be ‘adequate and appropriate in the circumstances’. This means that you must provide sufficient first aid equipment (first aid kit), facilities and personnel at all times.

Where do I start to consider about what first aid provision is required in my workplace?

In order to decide what provision you need to make; you should undertake a First-Aid needs assessment. This assessment should consider the circumstances of your workplace, workforce and the hazards and risks that may be present.

The findings will help you decide what first-aid arrangements you need to put in place.

In assessing your first-aid needs, you should consider:

-the nature of the work you do
-workplace hazards and risks (including specific hazards requiring special arrangements)
-the nature and size of your workforce
-the work patterns of your staff
-holiday and other absences of those who will be first-aiders (planned and unplanned absences)
    -your organisation’s history of accidents

You may also need to consider:

-the needs of travelling, remote and lone workers
    -the distribution of your workforce
-the remoteness of any of your sites from emergency medical services
-whether your employees work on shared or multi-occupancy sites
-first-aid provision for non-employees (e.g., members of the public)

How do I know which is the right First Aid course for staff to attend?

This will be in line with your first aid needs assessment along with any risk assessments that may need to be taken into consideration as part of your due diligence investigations.

For most workplace settings this will be the 1-Day Emergency First Aid at Work Level 3 Qualification, which covers the main first aid emergency modules, where your risk assessment identifies the degree of hazard associated with your work activities is of a low-hazard (i.e. offices, shops and libraries).

For workplace environments that are identified to be of a higher hazard (i.e. construction, light engineering and assembly work), the 3-Day First Aid at Work Level 3 Qualification course may then need to be undertaken to cover all of the first aid modules that would be relevant to meet the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981.

For those with a current and valid First Aid at Work certificate after completing the 3-day course, can then attend a 2-Day First Aid at Work Level 3 Requalification course to remain as a qualified first aider in the workplace. This 2-Day requalification course must be completed prior to the expiry date of the current certificate, where a copy may be requested by JPF First Aid following audit and administration processes.

All of the qualifications mentioned above are Ofqual regulated to further ensure you are meeting your obligations as an employer and will be receiving the right training for your staff as a result. For a list of the modules completed on the courses, please see the ‘workplace courses’ page on the website or contact JPF First Aid on 01543 398370 or email to training@jpffirstaid.co.uk.

How and when will I receive the certificates following the completion of the course?

Certificates can be processed where you can receive a hard copy which comes with a pocket-sized card detailing the course completed or you can opt for a digital copy which can be sent to you by email.

Timeframe for receiving the certificates will depend on which copy you opt for, where the digital copy can be sent to your email address within 3 days of the completion and processing date of the course. For certificates opting for hard copy, they will be with you within 10-14 days depending on the postal service, where these will be posted from JPF First Aid on a ‘signed for’ delivery method.

Payment also needs to have been received before certificates can be applied for and then sent on to you.

I have noticed that JPF First Aid offers First Aid for Mental Health Qualification courses but what is the difference between them?

Level 1 (Awareness) – This course would be aimed at the entire workforce so that your staff can gain the understanding needed.

Level 2 – This course would be aimed at those members of the workforce looking to be a First Aider for Mental Health within the workplace.

Level 3 (Supervising) – This course would be aimed at those members of the workforce looking to be a First Aider for Mental Health within the workplace, however within a management/HR role.

All of these courses are similar to those provided by MHFA England, however the difference being that with these courses they are Ofqual regulated, where delegates will receive a recognised qualification upon successful completion appreciating and recognising your staff members achievements.

Do you offer first aid sessions for school pupils?

Yes, JPF First Aid can provide a variety of first aid sessions from 1-hour taster sessions to 5-hour full day sessions towards meeting the curriculum. These sessions can be provided to both primary and secondary educational settings.

First aid sessions can also be delivered towards meeting different awards including the Duke of Edinburgh Award and Health and Social Care studies.

Mental Health Training for Children sessions are also now available, should this be of any interest to your educational setting.

For more details please see the ‘pupil courses’ page or please contact JPF First Aid on 01543 398370 or by email to – training@jpffirstaid.co.uk

Do you have to attend courses in person or is there the option to attend an online course?

There are courses available where you can attend an online course and would say this would all be dependent up on your learning style. You also need to be able to dedicate the time needed for the study period as part of the online distance learning course as well as be in an environment where you will not be distracted whilst in attendance.

Courses available to undertake as part of an online delivery method are:

     Health and Safety

    • Fire Safety
    • Awareness of First Aid for Mental Health
    • First Aid for Mental Health
    • Supervising First Aid for Mental Health

Please contact JPF First Aid for more information on the above distance learning courses.

Should you have any other questions, then please do not hesitate to contact JPF First Aid.
