JPF First Aid FAQs

Do I need a First Aider in my workplace?

Under the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981, employers have a legal responsibility to provide adequate and appropriate first aid arrangements for employees who become injured or ill at work.

The number of trained first aiders required will depend on a workplace first aid needs assessment, taking into consideration factors such as the number of employees, workplace hazards, working patterns and the nature of the business.

Having employees trained in Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) or First Aid at Work (FAW) helps ensure that someone has the knowledge, skills and confidence to respond effectively when an emergency occurs.

JPF First Aid provides regulated workplace first aid qualifications to help businesses establish appropriate first aid provision and create safer working environments.

How do I know what first aid provision is needed for my workplace?

Under the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981, employers must ensure that first aid provision is adequate and appropriate in the circumstances.

To determine what is required, employers should carry out a workplace first aid needs assessment, considering factors such as the number of employees, workplace hazards, previous accidents, shift patterns and the location of the workplace.

This assessment helps establish the appropriate first aid equipment, facilities and number of trained first aiders needed to ensure assistance is available when required.

JPF First Aid offers regulated Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) and First Aid at Work (FAW) qualifications to help businesses provide appropriately trained first aiders.

Where do I start to consider about what first aid provision is required in my workplace?

The starting point is to carry out a workplace first aid needs assessment. This helps employers identify the appropriate first aid arrangements based on their working environment, employees and potential risks.

When completing your assessment, you should consider:

  • Nature of the work: The activities undertaken and any specific workplace hazards or risks.

  • Workforce: The number of employees, their working patterns and how they are distributed across the workplace.

  • First aider availability: Ensuring appropriate cover during shifts, holidays, sickness and other absences.

  • Accident history: Previous workplace accidents and incidents that may highlight particular risks.

  • Workplace location: The proximity of emergency medical services and any challenges associated with remote locations.

  • Lone and remote workers: Arrangements for employees working independently, travelling or working away from the main workplace.

  • Shared workplaces: Coordinating first aid arrangements where multiple businesses operate from the same premises.

  • Visitors and members of the public: Considering whether first aid provision should extend to non-employees.

The findings will help determine the appropriate number of trained first aiders, the level of training required, and the necessary first aid equipment and facilities.

JPF First Aid provides regulated workplace first aid qualifications, including Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) and First Aid at Work (FAW), to support businesses in establishing suitable first aid arrangements.

How do I know which is the right First Aid course for staff to attend?

Choosing the appropriate first aid qualification for your employees will depend on the findings of your workplace first aid needs assessment, taking into consideration the hazards, risks and activities associated with your business.

JPF First Aid offers the following Ofqual-regulated Level 3 workplace first aid qualifications:

Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) – 1 Day

This qualification is generally suitable for workplaces with lower levels of risk, such as offices, shops and libraries, where the first aid needs assessment identifies EFAW as appropriate.

The course provides essential practical skills to help employees recognise and respond to common workplace first aid emergencies.

First Aid at Work (FAW) – 3 Days

This more comprehensive qualification is generally appropriate for workplaces with higher levels of risk, such as construction, engineering and manufacturing environments, or where the needs assessment identifies a requirement for broader first aid training.

It covers additional first aid knowledge and practical skills to help employees respond to a wider range of injuries and medical emergencies.

First Aid at Work Requalification – 2 Days

Employees holding a current and valid First Aid at Work qualification can attend the two-day requalification course to renew their certification.

The requalification course should be completed before their existing certificate expires. JPF First Aid may request a copy of the current certificate as part of the registration and verification process.

Flexible Training Options

For added flexibility, JPF First Aid offers both traditional face-to-face training and blended learning options for these qualifications, combining online learning with practical classroom sessions.

All three qualifications are Ofqual-regulated and delivered in accordance with the relevant qualification requirements.

For further information about course content and learning outcomes, please visit our Workplace First Aid Courses page.

Alternatively, contact JPF First Aid on 01543 398370 or email training@jpffirstaid.co.uk for guidance on selecting the most suitable qualification for your workplace.

How and when will I receive the certificates following the completion of the course?

Following successful completion of your training course, JPF First Aid offers both digital certificates and traditional hard-copy certificates, depending on your preference and the qualification undertaken.

Digital Certificates (E-Certificates) – Our Preferred Option

Digital certificates are normally issued by email within 3 working days, provided all course documentation has been processed and payment has been received in full.

Digital certification is JPF First Aid’s preferred option as part of our commitment to reducing paper consumption, minimising our carbon footprint and supporting more environmentally responsible business practices.

E-certificates also provide a convenient way to access, store and share qualifications with employers.

Hard-Copy Certificates

Where hard-copy certificates are requested, these are normally issued within 14 days, subject to processing and postal delivery times.

Hard-copy certificates may also include a pocket-sized qualification card, where applicable.

Important Information

Please be aware that certificates cannot be released until payment for the training has been received in full.

If you have any questions regarding your certificate, please contact JPF First Aid on 01543 398370 or email training@jpffirstaid.co.uk.

I have noticed that JPF First Aid offers First Aid for Mental Health Qualification courses but what is the difference between them?

JPF First Aid offers three levels of Ofqual-regulated First Aid for Mental Health qualifications, designed to help individuals and organisations develop greater awareness, understanding and confidence when supporting mental health and wellbeing.

Each qualification provides a different level of knowledge and responsibility, allowing employers to select the most appropriate training for their workforce.

Level 1 – Awareness of First Aid for Mental Health

This introductory qualification is ideal for employees across all levels of an organisation who would benefit from developing a greater awareness of mental health.

It introduces common mental health conditions, helps participants recognise potential signs of poor mental health and encourages a more supportive and understanding workplace culture.

Level 2 – First Aid for Mental Health

This qualification is designed for individuals who wish to take on a more active role in supporting mental health within their workplace or community.

Participants develop the knowledge and skills to recognise signs of mental ill health, approach someone who may be struggling, provide initial support and encourage access to appropriate professional help.

It is particularly suitable for employees who wish to become designated First Aiders for Mental Health.

Level 3 – Supervising First Aid for Mental Health

This more comprehensive qualification is particularly suitable for managers, supervisors, HR professionals and individuals with responsibility for supporting employee wellbeing.

Building upon the knowledge covered at Level 2, it explores mental health conditions in greater depth, alongside approaches to supporting individuals, promoting positive mental health and understanding the importance of workplace mental health policies and procedures.

Recognised Qualifications

All three courses lead to Ofqual-regulated qualifications, providing formal recognition of the knowledge and understanding gained following successful completion.

JPF First Aid offers flexible delivery options, including face-to-face training and live online learning, with supported self-study available for selected qualifications.

For further information or guidance on selecting the appropriate qualification for your organisation, please contact JPF First Aid on 01543 398370 or email training@jpffirstaid.co.uk.

Do you have to attend courses in person or is there the option to attend an online course?

JPF First Aid offers a range of flexible training options, including face-to-face courses, blended learning, live online training and supported self-study, depending on the qualification.

The most suitable option will depend on the course requirements, your preferred learning style and the time you can dedicate to your training.

Workplace First Aid – Face-to-Face and Blended Learning

Our regulated workplace first aid qualifications, including Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW), First Aid at Work (FAW) and Paediatric First Aid (PFA), are available through traditional classroom training or blended learning.

Blended learning combines online theory modules, completed before attending, with practical face-to-face training and assessment.

This provides greater flexibility while ensuring participants develop and demonstrate the practical skills required for their qualification.

First Aid for Mental Health – Flexible Learning Options

Our First Aid for Mental Health qualifications are available through different delivery methods, depending on the course selected.

These include:

  • Face-to-face training: Interactive sessions delivered in person.

  • Live online training: Tutor-led sessions delivered through platforms such as Zoom or Microsoft Teams.

  • Supported self-study: Available for selected qualifications, allowing learners to complete their studies independently within an agreed timeframe, with support available when required.

Unlike workplace first aid qualifications, our First Aid for Mental Health courses do not use a blended learning format.

Other Online Training Opportunities

JPF First Aid can also provide selected Health and Safety and Fire Safety training through online learning options, subject to course availability.

Choosing the Right Learning Option
